Berry Overnight Oats
Creamy oats with yogurt, chia and berries are ready when morning begins.
About this recipe
Overnight oats are a practical breakfast for mornings when there is little time to cook. The oats absorb milk in the refrigerator, chia seeds add body and yogurt makes each jar creamy. Fresh berries on top bring contrast and keep their texture better than berries stirred in the night before.
The recipe takes about ten minutes to mix, followed by at least six hours of chilling. Use old-fashioned rolled oats for a spoonable texture. Instant oats can become mushy, while steel-cut oats remain too firm without a different method. Adjust the milk in the morning if you prefer a looser bowl.
Ingredients
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup milk or unsweetened oat milk
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup mixed berries
- 2 tablespoons chopped almonds, optional
Method
- Divide oats and chia seeds between two jars or covered containers.
- Whisk milk, yogurt, maple syrup and vanilla. Pour evenly over the oats and stir each jar thoroughly, including the bottom corners.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.
- Stir before serving. Add a splash of milk if thick, then top with berries and almonds.
Keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Add berries and almonds just before serving for the best texture.
Final thoughts
Two jars made in the evening take a decision off the next morning. The base is easy to repeat with different seasonal fruit, nuts or seeds. Keep the toppings separate until serving and breakfast will taste fresher even on a rushed day.
Helpful cooking notes
- Use rolled oats. They soften overnight without losing all texture.
- Stir thoroughly. Dry pockets of chia can remain at the bottom if the mixture is not mixed well.
- Adjust sweetness. Taste in the morning and add a little more maple syrup only if needed.
